| Greenwoods Communications
- a leading independent network solutions provider to
the communications industry - today announced it has secured
a new contract from Chiltern Railways to deliver enabling
works for the roll out of new generation ticket machines
across the Chiltern Railways route. The project, which
is being managed on behalf of Chiltern Railways by Laing
Rail Project Delivery, involves electrical, data cabling
and civil works at 24 stations over a seven-month period
beginning April 2005. The new generation ticket machines
are manufactured by Shere with Greenwoods working closely
with the company as the project is rolled out. |

Chiltern Railways, which is wholly owned by Laing
Rail, operates passenger services out of London Marylebone to Aylesbury,
Birmingham and the West Midlands. Chiltern Railways was the first,
and is the only, UK rail company to win a 20-year franchise. Laing
Rail plans to invest some £370 million to further enhance safety,
punctuality and service quality. The enabling works project that has
been awarded to Greenwoods is a key element for the installation of
the new generation ticket machines. "Following a competitive
tendering process, our decision to award the contract was based on
our assessment of the health and safety, technical and commercial
aspects of each contractor's bid. Greenwoods demonstrated that it
possesses the resources and flexibility to meet the projects challenging
timescales. This, in conjunction with our previous experience of Greenwoods'
high level of customer care and service, led to our decision. The
enabling works are fundamental for the introduction of the new generation
ticket machines for Chiltern Railways to meet one of its key franchise
commitments which will further improve its facilities for passengers."
said Rob Brighouse, Projects Director, Laing Rail. "We are
naturally delighted to have been chosen by Laing Rail to implement
this particular project. The programme of works revolves around a
flexible project management schedule that allows us to undertake the
enabling works without causing undue disruption to fare-paying passengers
and Chiltern Railways staff. We will be installing data and power
connections, providing concrete plinths and installing security and
anti-theft measures. Our teams of engineers have already surveyed
all the 24 stations that will receive the new generation ticket machines.
A total of 43 machines will be installed and this requires us to co-ordinate
our works with Shere," said Barry Silverman, Data Sales Manager, Greenwoods
Communications.
As a Link-up approved supplier, this contract underpins Greenwoods
commitment to the rail industry. The company's transferable skills
in telecom and data networks offers Chiltern Railways and other train
operating companies with a viable option to deliver a wide range of
services. About
Chiltern Railways
Since winning the franchise in 1996, Chiltern Railways has run scheduled
passenger services along the M40 corridor between London Marylebone
and Birmingham Snow Hill and London Marylebone to Aylesbury via Amersham
along the London Underground Metropolitan line. In 2002 this was extended
as far as Kidderminster. As one of the franchises forming the UK's
National Rail network, Chiltern Railways is dedicated to providing
passengers with a safe, reliable, welcoming and value for money service
which offers them a real choice and a viable alternative to other
modes of transport.
Chiltern Railways has been awarded the title of 'Best Rail Route'
for three consecutive years, but also it is arguably the country's
most successful rail franchise, delivering exceptional customer satisfaction
levels and a 57% growth in passenger journeys since 1995/96.
