Greenwoods Communications
Launches Industry's First Remote Access Power Unit -
13th March 2002

 |
| Greenwoods Communications,
the UK's leading independent provider of telecoms infrastructure
services, has launched the industry's first product for
the remote control of power distribution units. The Remote
Access Power Distribution Unit (PDU) allows companies
to monitor via the web both the level of power being consumed
by their equipment and the environmental conditions in
the rack. The Remote Access PDU has been developed and
manufactured by Telecom Protection Technologies (TPT),
a company recently acquired by Greenwoods Communications.
The solution is currently being rolled-out for a global
ISP across Europe. |

Until now, the PDU could not be controlled remotely.
The Remote Access PDU uses a web-based interface that enables IT managers
and site controllers to monitor and implement changes at mobile base
stations, colocation centres, financial institutions, retail chains
etc from almost any location. This product will enable companies to
remotely shut down equipment and also deploy a switching sequence
when re-booting - enabling the full automation of off-site locations.
"This product represents a major advance in power management,"
said Chris Down, Technical Director at TPT. "For example, colocation
centres charge their customers for the amount of power used, but until
now have had to estimate individual consumption. The new power unit
can remotely monitor the exact power consumption for each customer
and report usage, thereby giving improved billing and increasing cost
effectiveness." "This product is a great example of the
innovation that TPT is renowned for," said John Greenwood, MD Greenwoods
Communications. "We work closely with telecoms providers and have
seen a real need for remote power management. For example, currently
90% of engineer call outs to remote locations are for a system reboot,
by enabling providers to do this remotely we can help them make very
significant cost savings. The benefits of this product in remote installations
speak for themselves, and make it a valuable addition to our portfolio."
