Problem
Faced
with the need to house and test 2048 household modems for data and
voice use, as part of the testing for their 21CN kit, Fujitsu approached
Greenwoods to design, build and install a bespoke solution for this
requirement.
The rack requirements were so specialised there were key problems
that had to be addressed during the design stage including space
constraints, heat dissipation and interference. Utilising the expertise
across Greenwoods, an appropriate solution was achieved in a very
short time frame.
The
Solution
Greenwoods provided a turnkey package to provide the customer with
the required solution. A dedicated Project Management team were
appointed, working closely with Fujitsu the Project Team co-ordinated
the design, build and installation of the solution.
Telfab, the rack manufacturing arm of Greenwoods, designed a prototype.
The custom-made side access, fan cooled lab rack utilised 2mm mild
steel and incorporated a special call centre interface panel. This
was then strengthened to ensure it could cope with the 500k weight
of the finished rack.
Bespoke power solutions were supplied by Greenwoods company Telecom
Protection Technologies Ltd (TPT). The 25 way power distribution
units utilised in the rack were a combination of left and right
facing, eight in total.
Greenwoods’ multi-functional in-house workshop manufactures
cable assemblies, including enhanced DSL modems and custom designed
interfaces.
All component parts were assembled and configured by staff in the
specialist rack build facility at the Greenwoods Headquarters in
Coleshill, Birmingham.
Esprit, the in-house transport company, delivered the solution
in vehicles with air ride suspension and tail lifts, direct to site
for installation ensuring everything met the required deadlines.
To complete the project, the solution was then installed and commissioned
by Greenwoods’ engineers.
